Scanning for restoration and architectural archiving
Scanning technology has been used to great effect for the purposes of restoration work. The detail that is captured with a scan can be used to recreate architectural pieces to a very high degree of accuracy. This can either be used to replace a piece before it disintegrates in areas such as ancient monuments or to recreate the piece fully and replace the piece completely. These two options depend on the project and the client’s views on what restoration should be.
Architectural archiving is the practice of scanning objects/buildings that may be in good repair currently but are of high cultural or artistic value thus preserving them for future restoration projects.
The scanning of buildings also has other uses including precise space planning of empty/gutted buildings for refurbishment.
